Empowerment Initiatives

As part of the ongoing Taxi-Trucks BEE initiative, a very successful empowerment programme has been implemented.

Owner-operators from previously disadvantaged communities provide Taxi-Trucks with dedicated vehicles owned by the drivers and operated exclusively on behalf of Taxi-Trucks. These owner-operators are contracted to Taxi-Trucks branches throughout South Africa, and reflect the demographics of the communities within which Taxi-Trucks operates. It is the intention to roll out this initiative over the next few years, targeting at least a 50% owner-operator representation within the Taxi-Trucks infrastructure within three years.

Taxi-Trucks also empowers employees to develop their entrepreneurial expertise and ultimately for them to be owners of their own mini-businesses. The company provides employment to over 200 independent contractors.

This programme has been in place for five years, the next phase being for us to assist them with the acquisition of their own vehicles. This will culminate in the ownership and operation of these assets by them on behalf of Taxi-Trucks.

On-going training has also been undertaken within Taxi-Trucks, resulting in the promotion of numerous employees from previously disadvantaged backgrounds into junior- and middle-management positions within the company.

Many of these employees began their working career at Taxi-Trucks as vehicle assistants, administrative clerks and general labourers when the company was established 15 years ago. Currently over 50% of our middle- management structure consists of persons from these previously disadvantaged communities.
